So now that you’ve decided to create a network, what do you need? Every computer needs a device that allows it to talk to the other computers on the network. These are called network interface cards or NICs. Each has a port where a cable attaches. The good news is that almost all new computers come with built-in NICs. To connect one computer to another you need a piece of cable called—you may find this hard to believe, it actually makes sense—a network cable. The next step is tying the cables together.

That is done through a piece of equipment called a hub. Today it is more commonly called a switch. This box has a bunch of cable connectors on it. That is where all the cables from the computers come together. As far as hardware is concerned, our network is complete!
